Nearly 25 years ago, Tupac Shakur wrote a now-infamous letter to Madonna, filled with love, regret, gratitude, vulnerability, and Shakur’s poetic genius. Despite the Material Girl’s best efforts, the letter is now going up for auction.
Madonna had previously filed a lawsuit against Darlene Lutz, her old friend and art consultant, to block the sale, but a judge threw it out and said that a release she had signed back in 2004 meant she couldn't sue. Lutz gave the letter to online auction house Gotta Have Rock & Roll, and TMZ reports the opening bid is US$100,000.
Madonna’s immense protest has only added to the value of the letter, however, and the handwritten note is expected to go for more than three times its starting bid. The bid starts on July 17, and a portion of the proceeds will go to breastcancer.org, as Lutz is a breast cancer survivor.
As we wait to see how much fans will fork over for the intimate letter, check out the gallery to learn more about the letter, and see the other celebrity items—from used tissues to kidney stones—for which people have paid eye-watering amounts of money.
