While news coming from the White House via social media platforms is no longer big news, First Lady Melania Trump being viciously insulted by a US Congressional candidate is utterly shocking.

Mark Roberts, a Republican politician from Oregon took to Twitter to state, "Did you know the First Lady works by the hour? #thinkdirty #hoebag."

Online commentators quickly came to the defense of Melania Trump on both sides of political lines, questioning why Roberts made this statement and why Twitter has not taken it down.

Roberts followed up the backlash with a screenshot of the official Twitter inquiry into his comments, saying that he did not violate the social media's rules or applicable law.

Neither President Donald Trump or Melania have responded directly to this online attack.
