LIFESTYLE Healthy living

As an actress famed for her roles in 'Sin City,' 'Seven Pounds,' and as Claire Temple in the Marvel/Netflix Universe, along with being a long-time devoted activist and mother, Rosario Dawson has quite a busy life. But it seems she's mastered the art of self-care in the few empty slots of her jam-packed schedule.

Dawson spoke to MindBodyGreen about her idea of wellness and how she learned about healthy living, having grown up in an abandoned building in New York, living off co-op boxes of groceries with a mother who was a teenager when she had her. Contrary to popular belief, Dawson believes wellness was not something reserved for the privileged, and that it was actually low-income people who focused primary on eating healthy foods because it was cheaper to buy groceries than it was to go to the doctor or skip out on work. She's spent a lot of time analyzing the real costs of wellness, and she knows where to indulge.

Firstly, the 39-year-old swears by meditation. And not just a couple minutes here and there, but rather she aims for 40 minutes each day. While that might seem impossible to squeeze into your schedule, there are various apps to help you get started with just 10 minutes at a time, which alone has been proven to make a significant difference in people's lives.

Secondly, she starts every day with a healthy protein-filled smoothie, though recently she's been blending some oatmeal into it as well. "What I've noticed over the years, especially on all the different 'Marvel' shows, when people are really working on their fitness and energy levels—they always add oatmeal," the actress said. So, make like a superhero and get Quaker-ing.

The last secret to her wellness routine is a broad stroke of self-care, but not in the form of candlelit baths or buying herself new clothes. The most important part of self-care to Dawson is tuning into, and obeying, her gut instincts and needs. That might be as simple as going to bed early so that her daughter can see her waking up fresh and energetic in the mornings instead of gruff and exhausted. She sees her own self-care as a means of being able to set a better example for and being able to take better care of her daughter, recognizing that sometimes in order to be selfless you have to focus on yourself first.

Mostly, however, Dawson sees wellness as a way to enjoy life more. "Here's the thing," she says. "It doesn't matter which way you end up going, but can we honestly say we were enjoying the ride? Or are the miles going by and you're just trying not to fall asleep at the wheel? I really wanna take in the scenery, pull over once in a while. I wanna be on a beautiful road trip."
