Quit fighting boredom and embrace it
Why being bored is so important
In modern times it’s become quite normal to be constantly occupied with something every waking hour. Due to our busy lives, we have little time for ourselves, so we make sure we don’t waste a minute of it. Due to the introduction of smartphones and Netflix, it’s become nearly impossible to be bored. While the advantages are clear, we often neglect the possible downsides of erasing boredom from our lives.
It would surprise you to know how many brilliant inventions and progressive philosophical thoughts started inside a bathroom, either in the shower or on the toilet. Would these ideas have surfaced if those people were doing crossword puzzles, using a phone or if the bathroom was equipped with smart speakers? It’s when you let go of your surroundings and let your mind wander freely that you’ll often have the most creative and original ideas.
By constantly being busy, we quickly forget why we do what we do. Are you happy with your job? Is your relationship still working for you? What do you wish to accomplish with your life? It’s crucial to ask these questions regularly, yet we often distract ourselves and postpone important life decisions. In order to take control and stop living on autopilot, we first have to give our mind some breathing room to figure out what we want.
To fully appreciate something, you should let it go every now and then. By reminding yourself what life is like without friends, gadgets or entertainment, you will realize their worth as well as their downsides. By being bored now, you’ll find experiences that come later much more meaningful and enjoyable.
