HEALTH Allulose

It almost seems too good to be true, but scientists are convinced it’s possible: sugar without calories or a negligible amount of calories. A new type of sugar in development should contain twenty times fewer calories than regular sugar, which could revolutionize the food industry and massively reduce health problems.

Sugar usually has a calorie content of roughly 4 kcal, but a new type named allulose supposedly only has 0,2 kcal. This type of sugar is more than a pipe dream, as it already exists in nature, though it’s very rare. That is why a company is hard at work to produce the sugar on a much larger scale. Allulose should nearly have an identical taste to regular sugar, as opposed to current replacements which often have a distinct taste.

The sweetness revolution is currently in the works in Germany, possibly to provide Hansel and Gretel with more responsible accommodation. ‘Savanna Ingredients’ is responsible for figuring out how to produce the sugar on a large scale. The company is partly financed by the German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture.

It can still take years for the sugar to be produced on a massive scale and it still requires approval for consumption, but allulose may conquer the sweets industry if it can deliver on its promise of making sugar with significantly less calories.
