The Italian mastermind behind iconic films such as 'Last Tango in Paris,' 'The Last Emperor,' and 'The Dreamers,' Bernardo Bertolucci has passed away at the age of 77 after battling cancer. 

His death was confirmed by his publicist who stated Bertolucci died at 7 a.m. Monday morning. In 1987, the Italian icon became the one and only Italian ever to win an Oscar for Best Director for the film 'The Last Emperor.' He received his first Academy Award nomination in 1970 for 'The Conformist.' 

The Parma native, who was known for his colourful visual film style, died in the capital city of Rome, Italy at his home.
